Hey guys, I've some questions. I'm thinkin' on buyin a new HDD, probably Western Digital since they produce HQ HDD. Now, you know that there are S-ATA 2 HDD but few MoBo's with S-ATA 2 support. So my questions are:

"S-ATA 2 Ports are compatible with S-ATA HDD?
"S-ATA Ports are compatible with S-ATA 2 HDD?"

Since I'm buyin' WD... What class are better for me? Blue, Green or Black? I'm a gamer with a high-end PC and a lot of games. Also, I do modding and work with Photoshop, Premiere, After-Effects, Soundforge and that kind of sofware.

Now, about the RAID, my MoBo (ASUS M4A79 Deluxe) supports RAID 0/1/5/10. What RAID is the better for me?

Now, one last question: I'm thinkin' on buyin' a new Optical Drive. The one I've right now is old, but still works. Which one is better?

"LG 22X DVD/CD (Reader & Writer)" or "Sony 24X DVD/CD (Reader & Writer) Dual-Layer"?

Thanks in advance! wink.gif

Black Caviars.

Green has slower RPM and slower seek times.

Blue are good for run of the mill/mainstream. EG. My media PC has 3 320GB Blue's in RAID.

SATA will just scale to the fastest possible for the port/device.

SATA 2 Port > SATA drive, it'll only run at SATA.

SATA Port > SATA 2 Drive, it'll only run at SATA.

Just about every recent motherboard is SATA2... (this is also called SATA 3Gb/s on some websites). Your motherboard has it

QUOTE (newegg)
Storage Devices
PATA 1 x UltraDMA 133/100/66 for up to 2 PATA devices
SATA 3Gb/s 5
SATA RAID 0/1/5/10/JBOD

Here's info about RAID: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels

Basically RAID-0 for extra speed (but a higher chance of failure), RAID-1 for extra security. RAID-5 requires three hard drives, but has low overhead for redundancy compared to RAID-1 or 10 (0+1). Info is all in the link above smile.gif

I've had a lot of success with the toshiba / samsung SATA DVD burners. In any case, get one that is SATA, not PATA (IDE).

I would have gone SATA for my current rig if my PSU hadn't come with a PATA DVD drive... sad.gif
Couldn't pass up a free drive and it took $20 off the bill. xD

Well, thanks for your comments guys! You really helped me out! Now I know that my HDD is SATA2 and my MoBo Ports are SATA2 too. Since the best for me are the Black Caviars... what capacity should I buy? And how many HDDs?

Looks like RAID isn't for me. I'm goin' to get away from it.

Thanks guys! wink.gif
