Right i have a big problem, i had already bought myself my hd4870 for my new gaming build but the packaging it came in was plainly crap... looked like a fat man had used it as a cushion for the entire journey to my house... (lol) Still the place where i buy my parts from have stopped the 4870 line and i was wondering if it was worth me either A) Paying the extra for an Asus HD4890 or B) Paying a little bit extra and buying 2 hd4850's on my Asus M4A79XTD Motherboard ( Xfire both pci-e run at x8 )
4850's - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168023 4890 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/161725 Both come to roughly £150 (uk) -------------------- AMD Phenom XII 550 Unlocked -> X4 B50 @ 3.3ghz 1.3v
Stock Cooling (upgrading to T.R.U.120 :P ) G.skill 1600 mhz cl 7 @ 1760Mhz Cl 8 1.65v Asus M4A79XTD EVO motherboard XFX HD 5770 @ 900/1350 Antec Earthwatts 750W Antec 900 with extra 120mm side fan 1TB Samsung F3 SpinPoint |

Since the 4850 is lower model of the 4870 i would go the route of 4890. two weak cards usually don't give the umpf of a high-end card, not all games always properly recognize dual gpu's.
plus in the long run, you can add another 4890 and would smash multiple 4850's This post has been edited by cirro: Nov 7 2009, 02:36 PM -------------------- |

get the 4890 and skip the headaches of crossfire. .. 1 4890 performs better anyway

I once contemplated this. I was best off getting the better single card instead of going for crossfire.

Proformance aside, CF or SLI is a headache, works with some games....has problems with others, i'd have a single card just for convenience

Man I must be missing something. I have two 4850's running in crossfire in my x48 board and and moved my 4870's in crossfire to my new x58 board. Have not had a single problem running crossfire yet. I sometimes wonder around this place if the people giving advice have ever actually tried the things they speak of.

I sometimes wonder around this place if the people giving advice have ever actually tried the things they speak of. its a well known FACT that there are problems with scalability and reliability with Crossfirex AND sli.. just because YOU havent had problems on the select few games you have played, doesnt mean there arent problems This post has been edited by ShallowBay: Nov 8 2009, 07:00 AM -------------------- IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED, CALL IT VERSION 1.0 Xfire - shallowbay10 Steam - ShallowBay10 PlayStationNetwork - ShallowBay10 Rig: -Antec Three Hundred w/ 3 blue LED fans -Biostar 790GX -AMD Phenom II 940 @ 3.8ghz 1.48v -Corsair Hydro h50 Water Cooling -2gb OCZ Platinum 800mhz -evga 9800gtx+ -WD 500gb hdd -WD 1 tb hdd |
