I bought a nice little Asus N80VN laptop off craigslist that came with Vista Premium 32 bit. I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit. But, the install disc says I do not have a compatible version of Windows to do so. I bought the upgrade discs during the pre-order since they were priced so nicely. Now, I have to limit my computer to teh 32 bit version. Does anyone know a way around this?

You can not upgrade from a 32 to 64 bit os. You will need to do a clean install. Also your computer will need to be able to handle a 64 bit OS. If your laptop came pre installed with a 32 bit OS I would stick with 32.

The computer can handle 64 bit no problem. I have no issues doing a clean install, but I do not know if it is possible via the Windows 7 Upgrade discs I bought. I'm installing the 32 bit version now, but was hopng that I could use the 64 bit one.

yea thats right it comes with 2 disks same as vista ultimate. There was lots of people complaining to micrsoft because they stupidly downloaded the 64-bit upgrade from the microsoft store and when they tried to they couldn't because they were trying to go from 32 bit to 64 bit.
Reason is you cant update 32 to 64 bit is because the 64bit windows files are coded with a 64bit architecture and if you try to update 32 to 64 it will become a huge mess with tons of things not working. With the 2 disks one is 64 and one is 32 but if you don't have at least 4GB ram i wouldn't suggest 64 bit because there is no point if you don't have a good amount of ram. -------------------- ---Personal Gaming PC(Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04)--- Asus M4N82 Deluxe | AMD Phenom II x3 710 2.6Ghz | Stock HeatSink and 3500 rpm Fan BFG Tech Nvidia Geforce 250 GTS 512MB | PNY Ageia Physics Card 128MB SunBeanTech Fan Controller | Three 80mm 2500 rpm and one 80mm 6400(at 3500) Fan | 40mm asus optional Fan WD Caviar Green 1TB Sata(w7) |Western Digital 500GB IDE hard Drive(IDE -> SATA converter)(Ubuntu) | 16x DVD-RW Drive | 52x CD Drive Rosewill Green Series 630W ---Server Computer(Ubuntu Server 9.04)--- Compaq Presario 6000 Intel Pentium 4 2.0Ghz | Stock HeadSink and Fan | 120mm 1500 rpm Fan Western Digital 200BG IDE Drive | 16x DVD-R Drive | 42x CD Drive |

The computer has a P8600 CPU, 4GB or RAM and 1 GB of dedicated video RAM. I should be able to easily run the 64 bit. The problem is that I can't even get to an installion stage since the 64 bit disc says that my current version of the softawre is incompatible.

The problem is that I can't even get to an installion stage since the 64 bit disc says that my current version of the softawre is incompatible. that's weird, it even does that when you boot from the disk ? you should be able to put the disk in the dvd drive and restart, then change boot settings to boot from the dvd drive first .....you should not have these issues unless you're trying to upgrade from the vista 32 bit os... -------------------- [Gamer]Core i7/860@3.7, Gigabyte P55UD5, CM HyperTX3, 4g GSkill Ripjaw, 2xSapphire4850x2, W7 Pro 64bit

you cant install the 64-bit through windows itself, you need to boot up from the dvd instead of your hard disk

Scott P -
I'd recommend moving all of your precious files from the current OS to a removable drive or different partition on the current drive. As said before start the installation from the DVD - make sure to set your boot order in BIOS to boot from the optical drive first. Instead of choosing the upgrade option - choose the full installation option. During the installation it will prompt you for your serial number - DO NOT ENTER IT YET - hit enter to continue and finish the Win7 64 bit installation. Once installed reboot and once you're into Windows and connected to the internet you can validate your serial number then. Once you've got Win7 completely installed, validated and updated you can move your critical files back to the primary partition if you wish. Works a treat. But hurry before MS shuts that door...... |
