Burn a DVD

If you've bought a Windows 7 upgrade via Digital River, and you want to make a DVD for a clean install:
  1. Download attached ZIP, extract and move oscdimg.exe into /System32
  2. Attached File  7util.zip ( 64.67K ) Number of downloads: 483
  3. Leave the expandedSetup folder and all other downloaded files on your desktop
  4. Run Command Prompt as Admin
  5. Type the following, replacing USER with your username and 7.iso with the filename you want
    oscdimg -u2 -b"C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" -h "C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso
  6. Run the command, and you should see a percentage as it makes the ISO
  7. Burn the ISO to a DVD
You can now install Windows 7 from a new or formatted disk without worrying about the upgrade nonsense. smile.gif

Activation / Product Key Issues

This will only work afaik on the same disk you previously had Vista installed on.

If you want to use a new disk then use the following steps:
  1. Install Windows 7 on a new disk normally, but when it asks for a Product Key, just click 'Next'
  2. Once you're on the desktop, run Command Prompt as Admin
  3. Run Registry Editor by typing regedit
  4. Search the registry for mediabootinstall
  5. Change the value from 1 to 0
  6. Return to Command Prompt and type slmgr /rearm
  7. Restart your computer
  8. Activate Windows as normal
Your copy of Windows 7 should now be activated and ready to use.

Please only use this method if you own a full legal copy of Vista or XP and a legal 7 upgrade. If it all goes wrong, I can't accept any responsibility.

I also don't take credit for these methods, I've simply condensed information that's already been circulated around the internet.

I just downloaded the .iso, but Microsoft made a program so you can run the iso from a usb drive. Let me find a link to it.

For some reason, I am getting an error:

ERROR: Unable to create file "C:\7.iso of ######### bytes.
Erorr 5: Access is denied.

I am sure that my user account is an admin account, and I've double checked that I have the correct files in the right spots. Are there permissions I need to change? Is there a certain way to run a command prompt as an admin other than BEING an admin and opening a cmd prompt?

Thanks
